Capita, UK's Outsourcing Giant, Hit by Online Attack

Capita, a British outsourcing service provider with significant contracts in healthcare and the military, has acknowledged that IT disruptions experienced by some of its customers result from an online attack. The incident affected Capita's internal Microsoft Office 365 applications.

Capita's wide range of services includes recruitment for the British Army, managing London's congestion charge, monitoring individuals through electronic tagging, providing Wi-Fi access points at football stadiums, designing simulators for the Royal Navy, and offering customer service for a German telecommunications company.

Capita holds public sector contracts worth a total of $8 billion. Earlier in March 2022, Capita reported a data breach affecting some military recruitment data after The Register revealed that around 125 individuals' information was available for sale on a cybercrime forum.

A data breach refers to an incident where sensitive, protected or confidential data is accessed, stolen, or exposed by an unauthorized person or group. Data breaches can occur through a variety of means, including hacking, malware, phishing, physical theft, or even human error.

Increased frequency: The number of reported data breaches has been steadily increasing over the past few years, with a record 1,523 data breaches reported in 2020 in the United States alone.

Growing impact: The impact of data breaches is also increasing, with larger amounts of sensitive data being exposed. This includes personal information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and financial information.

More sophisticated attacks: Cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated in their attacks, using advanced tactics such as ransomware, where they encrypt data and demand payment for its release.
